Looking your age is a Taboo

Are wrinkles to become a thing of the past for the self-selected few, like crooked teeth after the invention of modern orthodontics?
As recently as a decade ago, the obliteration of wrinkles required full face-lifts or deep laser resurfacing. To partake of these expensive treatments required disposable income and recovery time; patients retreated with their wounds, to reemerge weeks later with smoother skin or a tighter jaw.
But now newer, less invasive treatments — including Botox injections to temporarily paralyze muscles beneath frown lines, Restylane injections to fill out facial creases and updated lasers to eliminate surface layers of skin — are easily available and relatively safe, albeit still too expensive for most people of middle-class.
These cosmetic technologies are also changing the way pop culture perceives the aging face. Once a biological fact of life like wrinkles now appear to be optional for those who can afford to smooth them.
Up to what extend would you go?

Aesthetic surgeon to visit Dubai centre

Dr Al Rustom’s Skin & Laser Center, dedicated to excellence in dermatology and aesthetic surgery, is bringing the best aesthetic surgeons to Dubai, making traveling abroad for excellent aesthetic treatment no longer necessary.
From February 10 till 15, Dr Beatrice Lafarge a renowned French aesthetic surgeon will be back in Dr Al Rustom’s operating block after a first very successful visit in November 2006.
Dr Lafarge, 58, with over 30 years experience, is a global authority specialised in cosmetic facial surgery (facelifts, botox, eyelid rejuvenation, nose reshaping, ear pin-back, scar revision), breast surgery (augmentation, reduction, lift and mal breast reduction) and body contouring (liposuction, tummy tuck, thigh and arm lift).
Dr Lafarge has a unique approach to aesthetic surgery; a feminine approach, particularly bearing in mind psychological aspects. She believes in gentle surgery early in time, rather than a late dramatic intervention. In other words, she encourages her patients to appeal to aesthetic surgery sooner rather than later and one small step at a time rather than one massive intervention. Her golden rules are: ethics and security.
Dr Lafarge is the grand-daughter of Charles Claoue, the first French aesthetic surgeon who set up his own hospital in Paris in the year 1950. At the time he already had many famous actresses amongst his clientele. Today Dr Lafarge is running her grandfather’s hospital, as did her father.
Dr Lafarge is the president of the French Society of Aesthetic Surgery, as well as being a fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

It looks like Clint Eastwood may have received some much needed skin care...probably laser re-surfacing by the looks of these images. Full Face laser re-surfacing is a good alternative for patients with severe sun damage. It usually improves both the appearance of the skin as well as reduces the potential for skin cancer from that old sun damage.
The CO2 Resurfacing Laser is highly sophisticated laser that gently and precisely removes the top layer of the sun-damaged and aging skin. New skin cells resurface they are treated and lay down new collagen that is indistinguishable from that newborn undamaged skin. This renewal process is similar in the result of a deep chemical peel, yet without in complications.
What can be treated effectively?
Surgeons use the CO2 Resurfacing laser like an artist’s brush, tailoring the skin rejuvenation procedure to patients individual needs. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and the mouth are smoothed. Deep laugh and frown creases can be softened. Acne scars and some uneven surgical scars are rendered much less apparent to the eyes.
Even delicate areas on the lips and eyelids can be rejuvenated safely and without bleeding. Depending on the type and depth of the wrinkle or scar, one or more sessions may be scheduled.
Short recovery time
Patients can expect no bruising or bleeding afterwards. Most patients have minimal pain, even after full face treatments. There is a significant amount of post-operative skin care. Patients are instructed in this and sent home with special creams to keep healing area moist and clean. Some swelling may occur for few days, particularly around the eyes.
The surface skin heals after 8-10 days. The new skin appears pink for one to three months but the color is easily camouflaged with cosmetics.
Would you go fo it?

Choosing a Surgeon

Here are few tips on choosing the right specialist:

1. All surgeons have to be licensed by the Department of Health in Dubai (Tel: 800 4991), so ring to ensure that no complaints have been made.
2. Look carefully at the surgeon’s qualifications. Degrees should be a specialty degree in plastic surgery such as an American Board or the FRCS from the Royall College of Surgeons (UK).
3. Ask for recommendations from people, see patient’s testimonials and if possible, ask them in person about their experience.
4. Look at your options. Consult with more than one surgeon and don’t be talked into anything – particularly at “free consultation”.
